End of winter

In New Zealand we celebrate the beginning of Spring with the first day of September.

In October the farmers and veterinarian will be busy with lambing.

This lovely sheep had her lambs much earlier.

I enjoy the warmer days for small walks not far away from our house.
This by example is a way up to a summit.

The broom will be covered with yellow blossoms soon and is so high you can’t see anything.

On the top you can catch a glimpse of snow by the faraway mountains.

We have no snow down here but instead a lot of blooming trees and flowers :-)
Our garden is full of interesting animals like this live bearing ‘copper skink’ which can be found only on the North island of New Zealand.

Our rabbits are also developing great and Fluffy is one who we take inside from time to time. He is Aileen’s favorite except for Anna of course :-)

We enjoy the last days of winter and are looking forward for an exciting Spring :-)

Snow!

While other Kiwis have a lot of snow we in Tawa have blooming spring flowers and roses!
Yesterday we thought to catch a bit snow and drove up the Rimutaka ridge.

When we reached the pass, Aileen and David had a good sleep and my husband and I enjoyed the quiet moment with a chicory coffee and sandwiches (I baked the rolls just an hour before)

Aileen already chased snow flakes in Austria when she was 2 years old. But David never touched snow in his 3 years on earth. He was shivering and not really happy to be in the cold. While my girl couldn’t get enough from the snow!

What we found amusing was that sooooooooo many people went up to the pass with their kids and all made a snowman to place on their front windshield while they headed back home again.
We never saw that before. Is that Kiwi style?

Warm winter day!

The weather here is unusual because we have winter and this day was warmer than some summer days!

We went to Spicer’s and found some new Basket fungus sprouting.
In my picture you see an old one and in front of it a young brown bud which is edible.

When they are open like a basket they are to chewy to eat.

After our forest trip we went to the beach and I was blown away by its beauty! This is New Zealand winter and all is blooming!

The African daisies are so beautiful!

David and Christoph inspected a big kelp:

While Aileen was making “Sand angels” (instead of Snow angels)

And I collected some Ice plant leaves for pickles… yes, you can eat them!

You can also eat the Neptune’s necklace which has fresh new shoots! And of course Sea lettuce which you can collect the whole year round.
As soon as I got time I will up date our Albums where you will find more pictures of this awesome day!
